MY REVIEW:
CITY IN SHADOW is the fourth Hidden Manhattan mystery and has all the best of the others in the series. That is that this Evan Marshall novel is a riveting story made up of several plot lines even though it is not that long of a book. The main character is Anna Winthrop who works as a Department of Sanitation supervisor. A respectable job unless you are Anna, who is the daughter of a billionaire businessman who is anything but happy with her career choice. With siblings who are all professionals, Anna came out as a debutante and then gave it up to take this job. She started at the lowest level and worked her way up to supervisor. The main plot has Anna, who is somewhat of a part time sleuth, investigating a sex trafficking ring. She finds out about this at the same time a very frightened woman leaves a note that says "HELP ME" right outside Anna's apartment in New York. The note is left on a truck that is parked by Anna’s apartment because she has sold an antique desk and two men from Little Odessa in Brooklyn are using the truck to transport it.
Anna’s boyfriend, Santos Reyes, a NYPD policeman, tries to talk Anna out of “playing detective“ but to no avail. Anna works with her neighbor from upstairs, Nettie, and they pretend to be maids to get inside a fancy Times Square apartment building where much of this trafficking is supposedly taking place.
Meanwhile, one of the other plots has Patti, who is Anna's cousin visiting from Cincinnati, sneaking around the area near Times Square and Hell's Kitchen, which is the same area where Anna lives as well works. Where that leads is just another part of this gripping mystery which will have readers turning pages to see what happens next. All plots meld and the story picks up speed as one twist leads to another turn. When you find out all the answers, the dilemma then becomes the wait for the next in this captivating series.
