ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Dick Cavett was the host of The Dick Cavett Show, which aired on ABC from 1968 to 1975 and on PBS from 1977 to 1982. He also hosted talk shows on the USA, HBO, and CNBC cable networks. He is the coauthor of Cavett and Eye on Cavett, and since 2007 he has written an online opinion column for The New York Times. He lives in New York City and Montauk, New York.

MY REVIEW:

In THE TALK SHOW, readers/listeners get the joy of listening to an American legend in his own way, Dick Cavett. A celebrated talk show host, author, and writer, Cavett shares his fascinating interviews with some of the most famous people from over the years. He is the talk show host who for most of us, was known as the “intelligent” interviewer…and in comparison to many, that is surely true. From Bette Davis to Norman Mailer, from Katherine Hepburn to Richard Burton, Dick Cavett shares his memories from these interviews with all of us. He, of course, includes his special friendship and stories with Groucho Marx as well. I thought the last part about John Wayne was very special.

As the son of an English teacher, Cavett is well-spoken as well as out spoken. He doesn’t hold back and goes right to the heart of the matter. As an intelligent man, he gives readers an education while you enjoy listening to him as well. He is easy to listen to and the stories of what went on behind the scenes is exciting because the majority of us would never know all that.

I think one part I especially liked was when Dick Cavett talked about his personal life growing up as well as his battle with depression. For me, it made him more approachable and “real”. The last disc in the audio book has some videos that are quite amazing. Seeing people like John Updike, Richard Burton, and John Cheever was exciting as well. This disc will play on your computer and not your standard player (well, not mine anyway).
 
THE TALK SHOW Audio Book is an interesting time spent with someone many people enjoyed over the years, while for some, it will be a new person to learn from and enjoy!
