ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jackie Warner, fitness expert, gym owner, television star and entrepreneur, instills passion into every aspect of her life. Fitness has always been a part of her life – as an accomplished childhood equestrian to collegiate athlete, Jackie built a strong base of experience and knowledge in both exercise and nutrition.

From a small town, Midwestern girl, to a self made millionaire by age 22, Jackie used her need for excellence and passion for creativity to become driven and diligent within the world of business. She found her first calling in the fitness industry while working as a writer for Warner Brothers. "I realized I had a much stronger purpose when I successfully turned a co-colleagues life around through diet, counseling and training. I was hooked and decided then and there to change career direction completely." Wasting no time, Jackie began revolutionizing the fitness industry by being one of the first to offer medical treatments within her multi-discipline wellness center in Beverly Hills called Lift. She also pioneered the concept of incorporating exercise therapy into traditional medical insurance plans.

Jackie’s next endeavor was Sky Sport & Spa, a sports medicine and fitness club in Beverly Hills which she founded in 2002. Expanding on the multi-discipline concept, Jackie offers members personal training, nutritional counseling, chiropractic care, exercise classes and physical therapy – all within a glass-enclosed penthouse space featuring a breathtaking 360° view of Los Angeles.

Jackie’s newly redesigned website (www.JackieWarner.com) is the ideal headquarters for viewing her many projects and passions. The website provides comprehensive fitness and nutrition information, along with the opportunity to create customized workouts. The online store will sell all of Jackie’s workout wear, exercise DVDs, protein shakes and energy bars, among other fitness accessories. Jackie Warner has raised the bar for wellness and continues to pioneer new concepts in fitness and nutrition. To read more about Jackie Warner check out her biography on the Hachette website HERE!

MY REVIEW:

Jackie Warner is a fitness legend of late and one look at the cover of her new book THIS IS WHY YOU'RE FAT (And How To Get Thin Forever) and I thought, not for me! Look at this woman’s body! However, the sub-title says “Eat More, Cheat More, Lose More, and Keep The Weight Off” and that caught my attention--eat more? I mentally challenged Warner to prove it to me in her research and program.

The basic of Jackie’s plan is to “eat clean” which amounts to whole grains, lean protein, and fresh vegetables and fruit. The normal overly processed foods you leave out are loaded with sugar (complex carbs) and that’s the biggest problem according to Warner. She also stresses looking at all you can eat and not what you can’t as then you feel deprived and on a diet. With this plan, you actually eat what you normally eat the first two weeks but add in other foods like two eggs daily (which really does curb your appetite), as well as certain amounts of fruits and vegetables, and of course water with lemon and a few vitamin supplements. The first two weeks is a way to jump start the plan, and motivate you! The other main element is exercise.

SO, now you say, I see…it IS a diet! Jackie only asks 20 min. of hard pushing exercise, five times a week. That 20 min. is divided into four 5 minute parts and repeated: two minutes of very active aerobic walking, two minutes of jogging as best as you can push it, and then cool down with 1 minute of walking-repeat 3 more times. Even I can do this and I admit, my fast and active aerobics and jogging probably is someone else’s stroll, but considering I did nothing before, it has to help. I just started and figured I can do anything for two weeks especially when I can still eat pizza and ice cream if I choose. Later you can vary exercises and Jackie includes great graphics to show the moves.

After the two weeks, the other highlight I look forward to is the “5 and 2“. That stands for being on the program I just loosely described 5 days, and then you can have 2 “treat days” where you can eat anything you want for one meal, or snack, on each of the two days. I imagine that once you are past the first two weeks (I am not yet) that if your weight is going down, you are eating fine but if not, perhaps you need to study the foods you can and can’t eat as well as your treats to see if something needs tweaking. I think I like this program and will let you know how it goes in a couple of months time. After all, it made sense to me when Jackie Warner didn’t talk down to me and instead said, “THIS IS WHY YOU'RE FAT”.

AUTHOR ARTICLE:

GYM ETIQUETTE

By Jackie Warner

If anybody knows about proper gym etiquette, it’s me. I own a gym and have to constantly stay on top of my staff to follow the rules. A lot of clients tell me that they’re intimidated by gyms because they feel they don’t know how to use the equipment or feel they are out of place, in the way. Part of feeling comfortable in the gym is knowing the rules of a gym. I’ll clear up a few of these for you, so you can go into any gym with confidence.

✱ Learn the proper operation of equipment. If you’re unsure of how something
works, ask for assistance.

✱ Pick up after yourself. Put your weights away. The next people in line don’t want to hunt around for the weights they need or, worse yet, try to remove the weights you left out.

✱ Allow people to “work in.” Many people do multiple sets on the weight machines, then sit on the equipment during their recovery time. If someone is waiting to use the same machine, the proper etiquette is to allow her to work in or do her set while you recover. So do your set, get off, and let the other person work in. Don’t be shy about asking someone if you can work in, either. However, don’t
work in if there are already two people waiting to use the same equipment.

✱ Don’t drop weights. Not only is dropping weights dangerous for your toes, but it
damages the equipment and the floor. The rule of thumb is: If you can lift it, you
can put it down gently.

✱ Observe time limits on cardio equipment. Some gyms have time limits (usually
thirty minutes) on the cardio equipment (treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, and so on), especially during peak hours. If you see people waiting around to use your type of machine, be especially conscious of the time limit.

✱ Wipe your sweat off the equipment. Gyms are notorious places for spreading
nasty germs like staph infections, so practice good hygiene. And always lay a
towel on the equipment to protect yourself.

✱ Don’t disturb other gymgoers. The gym can be a great place to meet other healthy people. But don’t be too chatty. You are there to work to intensity. Stay focused on your goals.
