An Emotional Survival Kit
BY THERESE J. BORCHARD
Whenever Therese Borchard was weathering a personal storm, and help was nowhere to be found, her one guiding light was the question, "What would a therapist say?" The result was a sort of therapy scrapbook for rough days--a quick reference for anyone who needs a dose of encouragement, support and tried and true ways to cope.
THE POCKET THERAPIST is a compact and accessible guide filled with techniques and advice to help combat everything from addictive behavior to negative thinking.

What would you pay to have a therapist at your beck and call whenever you had a problem or mood you needed help with? Many people see therapists and it is not inexpensive; advice only comes cheap when it comes from someone you don’t want it from. In THE POCKET THERAPIST, Therese J. Borchard once again hits the mark as she did in BEYOND BLUE, her last book I also reviewed. I found this compact green book literally small enough for a large pocket or small purse. Inside, I found a wealth of helpful hints and knowledge. What Borchard did was to write a book that is a quick reference guide and not one that you have to sit and read cover to cover before reaping any benefits. You certainly can, and I did and found it clever and interesting and practical. However, I think it is best used when one has a situation, problem, or time that they might otherwise use some good advice from their therapist. Looking up the particular situation, one can find clearly written and sensible ways of approaching their immediate condition.
Therese Borchard took common questions or problems people come up against and ask her about in therapy. She than writes a brief introduction of the problem in the context of what it really means, and tells how to deal with it. Each bit of knowledge is only 1 to 2 pages long at the most. She has taken a collection of clients’ questions and gives you exactly what a therapist would tell you if you were sitting right in front of them. Her answers have a base in spiritual teachings but are not centered on any one particular religion or school of thought. As it is described so well in the introduction, THE POCKET THERAPIST is “a field guide to getting by in the world”.
