In New York City, Nights Are Dangerous. Days Are Numbered.
When New York University sophomore Megan Gunther finds personal threats posted to a Web site specializing in campus gossip, she's taken aback by their menacing tone. Someone knows her daily routine down to the minute and is watching her—but thanks to the anonymity provided by the Internet, the police tell her there's nothing they can do. Her friends are sure it's someone's idea of a joke, but when Megan is murdered in a vicious attack, NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher is convinced that the online threats are more than just empty words.
With smooth, straight-talking partner J. J. Rogan at her side, Ellie tries to identify Megan's enemies, but she begins to wonder if the coed's murder was more than just the culmination of a cyber obsession. Phone records reveal a link between Megan and a murdered real estate agent who was living a dangerous double life. The detectives also learn that the dead real estate agent shared a secret connection to a celebrity mogul whose bodyguard was mysteriously killed a few months earlier. And when Megan's roommate suddenly disappears, they know they have to find her before another young woman dies.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Alafair Burke is the author of what the Sun-Sentinel has hailed as "two powerhouse series" featuring NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher and Portland Deputy District Attorney Samantha Kincaid. Alafair's novels grow out of her love for writing, her experience as a prosecutor in America's police precincts and criminal courtrooms, and her ability to create strong, believable, and eminently likable female characters. According to Entertainment Weekly, Alafair "is a terrific web spinner" who "knows when and how to drop clues to keep readers at her mercy." Her most recent novel, Angel's Tip, has been praised by Faye Kellerman as "a riveting read that snaps with the beat of New York. Be prepared for a knuckle-biting journey that'll keep you turning pages until the very end." Tami Hoag says, "Alafair Burke has created a winning heroine in Ellie Hatcher, someone to root for not only in this book, but I hope in many more tales as yet untold." According to Sandra Brown, "Alafair Burke is one of those rare writers whose books are both scary and cerebral. Complex plotting, multi-layered characters, a creepy serial killer — in Angel's Tip, Burke has once again.
REVIEW:212 by Alafair Burke is a new author and series to me but one that I would be interested in reading more of. This is a fast paced detective novel with well developed characters and a precisely woven tight plot. Set in New York City, Detective Ellie Hatcher and her partner, J. J. Rogan, are very good at their job. They balance each other quite well with their individual styles and strengths. However, they are stymied as they have been working for months on a case where a bodyguard has been murdered in the owner’s bedroom and there are no suspects that pan out. The deceased was a body guard for Sam Sparks who is well-known but has done little to cooperate with the detectives. Along with that, Sparks apparently has friends in the legal system backing him. A few months pass and just when they finally get a break in the case, they are pulled from it to work a new case where an NYU female student, Megan Gunther, has been murdered.
Megan had reported to the police that someone was threatening her on the internet but they told her nothing could be done about something like that on a campus website. Understandably, Megan’s parents are distraught and angry. J.J. and Ellie are as well because they were so close to a break in their other case. However, as Ellie checks this new case, she sees some similarities in both these cases and so decides to go willingly to take it on. As they compare the way the two cases seem to mirror each other, they try to come up with a scenario to connect the two victims but can’t. Ellie Hatcher is sure they are missing something very important but doesn’t see it as yet. When another woman is found dead, the detectives now are in a time crunch to find the key to these murders before someone else becomes the next target. As Hatcher and Rogan do begin to unravel the clues, a secret that should not get out emerges. Now, they ask themselves, what is next? How many more will have to die in order for them to keep this a secret?
Burke will keep her readers matching wits with the detectives and the murderer to try and figure out how these very different people are connected as readers turn the pages to find the killer before he, or she, strikes again!
