THE WILD ZONE where the motto is “Proceed at Your Own Risk” is a trendy South Beach Bar in Miami in Joy Fielding’s latest action packed, edge of your seat thriller. Three guys go into a bar--well, that is the joke the book starts off with but it also is how the story really begins. These three “guys” are Jeff, Will, and Tom and like good old boys love to do in a bar especially, they make a bet on who will be the first to get the attention of an attractive but despondent looking female in a booth by herself. The bet is to see who can take her home. Jeff and Will are both Rydells but only half-brothers, while Tom Whitman is an acquaintance. Into this trio, Fielding adds Kristen, the barmaid at The Wild Zone and current live-in girlfriend of Jeff, and last but not least in this strong cast of characters is Suzy, the “target” in the booth.
Joy Fielding establishes each character with an individual personality and uses her narrative talents to include each of their unique agendas so readers will eventually understand their intentions. Trust me at first you will probably wonder why are these people even together? As you read, you begin to realize how this group of misfits comes together and winds up in a dangerous predicament. There’s Jeff, who served in Afghanistan, using his natural assets to now be a personal trainer (and quite the lady‘s man), to Will, the shy younger sibling who is a philosophy student working on his PhD at Princeton. Tom is cut from a different cloth altogether. He was discharged from the service and reacts to things with totally different behavior than either of the brothers.
Kristen, appears to be a seemingly bright woman, but who is just fine with Jeff bringing other women home and sometimes she herself joins in with them…so I’ll let your imagination go from there. Finally, Joy Fielding has a star in Suzy, who is so much more than these fellows bargained for. She is married to an important doctor who is so possessive and abusive in every way possible, that Suzy comes up with a plan to find a way out of her horrific marriage.
THE WILD ZONE is wild! There is violence and sex and it is mixed with drugs and alcohol. While it is not my favorite kind of setting, I have to say it wasn’t gratuitous in any way but rather an important part of the story. A seemingly harmless bet turns into a story of suspense and danger as there is such an ingenious and startling turn in the story that readers can’t put it down. The end of the chapters leave you with that “I have to read just one more to see what that meant” feeling as Joy Fielding entertains and captures you before you know it. Even when you finish this book, you will still be asking what and how that happened? The tempo, direct intrigue, and numerous shocking revelations make THE WILD ZONE another of Joy Fielding’s popular bestselling contenders!
