REVIEW:
Dr. Elaine N. Aron, PhD, gives us THE UNDERVALUED SELF in which she explains how people need to understand that everyone has an inner voice telling them they aren’t good enough or they aren’t worthy. This she labels as the “Undervalued Self” and in her book helps people to learn to discover the causes of this and how they can guard against it. She says that people deny they are worthy in order to not have to make commitments. People usually will either make the goal not so important or too hard to attain, and so they give up. Aron explains that these goals can be realized by taking small steps; setting up little goals that lead to the main achievement.
Dr. Aron writes the book in a neatly organized way as a no nonsense, practical guide. Filled with persuasive examples that make the goals seem possible, the book is divided into nine chapters. She starts out by describing what the “undervalued self” is and how it affects a person’s self-esteem. She writes that being in a comfort zone is not always the best place to be. It can mean we are giving up too easily by making excuses when we are far more capable than we allow ourselves to be. She includes information about analyzing one’s past and advises against dwelling on specific traumatic experiences. The last part of the book summarizes and puts all the parts of the program together in one neat little package.
I thought there were some good points made by Elaine Aron in THE UNDERVALUED SELF. Anytime we can be made to do some self-evaluation of our feelings and actions, I say it is a good thing. I didn’t feel that the book spoke to me so much but then again, perhaps I am the kind of person who just might need it the most!
