Following the bestselling “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” Steve Hockensmith brings us “PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES: DAWN OF THE DREADFULS”. A prequel set in England during the time of the Jane Austen famed books, we find two sisters confronting zombies while looking for love...but I am not sure “in all the right places”. The author describes how Mr. Bennet, against his wife’s advice, brings in a deadly arts master to train his daughters to use swords and get in physical shape to protect themselves from these beasts. As a result of these unladylike activities and “career path”, the girls fall out of favor in the social world and are not invited to balls and teas. No respectable family would entertain them, let alone want to marry them.
Hockensmith presents some new characters including Baron Lumpley, Captain Cannon, Dr. Keckilpeeny, and Master Hawksworth. Master Hawksworth has been trained in Japan and is an outstanding martial artist. He mentors the sisters in their new career while Dr. Keckilpeeny hopes to study the zombies and well, certain particular body parts.
The book is a fun read and I believe even die hard Austen fans will flock to this one. The cleverly conceived cover on it own, stirs interest in the book. This is a stand alone novel and you don’t have to have read any of the others to enjoy it. Will the sisters slay these dastardly demons? How will Lord Lumpley’s secrets create a disaster for the Bennet girls? Will Master Hawksworth fall in love with one of the sisters? Will Dr. Keckilpenny tame the savage zombies? What part will Captain Cannon play in the story? Fans of this new “Austenesque” genre, will flock to this one for the fun of it for sure!
