MOONLIGHT FALLS

BY VINCENT ZANDRI

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Moonlight Falls is the Albany, New York-based paranoid tale (in the Hitchcock tradition) of former APD Detective turned Private Investigator/Massage Therapist, Richard “Dick” Moonlight, who believes he might be responsible for the brutal slaying by knife of his illicit lover, the beautiful Scarlet Montana. The situation is made all the worse since Scarlet is the wife of Moonlight’s boss, Chief of Detectives Jake Montana.

Why does Moonlight believe he might be responsible?

MY REVIEW:

MOONLIGHT FALLS by Vincent Zandri harkens back to the old mysteries where you were on the edge of your seat, startled at every sound, voicing an “Oh, no!” or an “Ah, ha!”, fearful of walking into a dark room in your house, and yet not one monster or alien was in sight. MOONLIGHT FALLS is a first-rate story that keeps you turning the pages and you never guess who the bad guy is until the exceedingly unpredictable ending. That is why I really liked this book when I started out wondering how on earth I ever could!

You see the main character is Richard Moonlight, sometimes called Dick Moonlight, who is a former detective but currently a combination of a private investigator and massage therapist! If that wasn’t hard enough to swallow, he had tried to kill himself but failed and part of the bullet is still lodged in his brain. That remnant causes Moonlight to have some loss of memory as well as a lack of the ability to tell right from wrong.

So can you see how the set up description of this character in the beginning of the book may have given me pause? Well, trust me, it didn’t last long!
Even with his somewhat unconventional name and background, Moonlight is a very likable character. He has problems for sure but you still find yourself pulling for him throughout the story. Zandri gives his character so much depth and empathy in the most subtle way that you have to be a fan. Moonlight is trying throughout the book to clear his name of a murder he isn’t even sure that he did or didn’t commit.

When the lovely Scarlet calls him to come over to give her a massage, he winds up sleeping with her. Scarlet, however, is his boss’s wife - first mistake - but remember, he can’t always tell right from wrong! When Moonlight is awakened in bed with her by the sound of what he believes is her husband coming home, he flees rather than be caught. When Jake, his boss, comes to him a while later to say his wife was savagely murdered in their bed, Moonlight is stymied and of course shocked! His hands he notices have cuts on them. Did he stab Scarlet and kill her?

As Zandri weaves this tale of mystery around Richard, “Dick“, Moonlight, he allows readers to feel the emotions of the characters with his exceptional descriptions and keeps our interest with the plot turns. Just when you think you know what is really happening, the proverbial rug gets pulled out from under you and things change once again. This is one of those books that you might be tempted to read the ending after a while just because you can’t wait to find out who did what! If you do, you will really miss such a spellbinding, engrossing ride with a finale to knock you out, that you will be sorry. PLEASE! Start this book when you have the time and won’t have to stop reading and you will be glad you did. Kudos, Vincent Zandri! I can’t wait to read what you write next!
