GIVEAWAY ENDEDSTILL LIFE
BY JOY FIELDING
New York Times bestselling author Joy Fielding delivers a riveting tale of suspense about a young woman caught in a nightmare somewhere between life and death.
Beautiful, happily married, and the owner of a successful interior design business, Casey Marshall couldn't be more content with her life, until a car slams into her at almost fifty miles an hour, breaking nearly every bone in her body and plunging her into a coma. Lying in her hospital bed, Casey realizes that although she is unable to see or communicate, she can hear everything. She quickly discovers that her friends aren't necessarily the people she thought them to be -- and that her accident might not have been an accident at all. As she struggles to break free from her living death, she begins to wonder if what lies ahead could be even worse.
"It is Fielding's ability to get under the skin of her characters -- and her readers -- that has made her such a dependably bestselling author," says the Calgary Herald. Smart, suspenseful, and overwhelmingly addictive, Still Life is a novel her fans won't soon forget.
I've always loved writing and found that it came relatively easily to me. I sent my first story off to a magazine when I was eight years old. The magazine was Jack and Jill, and the story was rejected. I also wrote plays that were performed by myself and a group of friends for our captive parents during summer vacation at the cottage. This became a yearly ritual and only stopped when I was about twelve and started going to camp instead. At twelve, I wrote my first TV script, the story of a twelve-year-old girl who murders her parents. Like my story to Jack and Jill, it, too, was rejected. Still, just the thought of it caused my parents many a sleepless night. I continued writing all through my teen years--I was always the kid being asked to read her compositions out loud in English class. In my last year of high school, my English teacher announced to the class that I was going to be a writer, something I hadn't really decided myself. I am so excited that Joy Fielding agreed to an interview. Now that I have read two of her books, I want to know more about her AND read the rest of her work. Thanks to Joy for taking time when I know how busy she is with her latest book, THE WILD ZONE, due out in just a few weeks. Please welcome to BOOKIN' WITH BINGO, the amazing Joy Fielding!
1. What is the next or current book/project you are working on?
I am working on a new novel set in Ireland, titled “Preferred Lies.” It’s about a woman on holiday in Ireland who sees the daughter she believed has been dead for two years.
2. What have you just finished reading?
I just finished two books, “Star – How Warren Beatty seduced America” by Peter Biskind, and an advanced readers’ copy of “The Scent of Rain and Lightning” by Nancy Pickard.
3. What books would you say have made the biggest impression on you, especially starting out?
Anything by Philip Roth and “Play It As It Lays” by Joan Didion, although I don’t write anything like either of them.
4. What gets you started on a new book? A character or story idea or….?
It can be any or all of the above. Sometimes it starts with a character. More usually it starts with a plot idea. Occasionally even a street sign – for example, “Mad River Road” will appeal to me as a title, and I take it from there.
5. What is something about you that you would want people to know about you that we probably don’t know?
I’m pretty much an open book, as it were. Maybe some people don’t realize how serious I am about what I do and how much effort goes into my writing, so it would be nice to have people appreciate that.
6. What is your best advice to anyone, including young people, who want to be writers?
Read, read, read. Also, do an outline. It really helps focus your thoughts.
7. What is something you would like to share with us about writing your favorite genre in general?
Again, that it’s not as easy as it looks. Especially when you’re writing suspense, you have to plot things out very carefully. Nothing should happen by accident and nothing in the book should be extraneous. Everything an author puts on the page should be there for a reason. Having said that, making up stories is the best, most fun thing there is to do, and I recommend it highly to anyone with both the necessary discipline and imagination to do it.
