MY REVIEW:
THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART PRESENTS..EARTH (THE BOOK) is topping the best seller’s charts for a reason. People love Jon Stewart and love to laugh. If you have a great sense of humor and are able to not take yourself and things so seriously every minute of your life, then you will enjoy “EARTH“. I, personally, feel acutely inadequate to “review” this book because I am unable to produce any kind of proof of my expertise that would qualify me to “judge” writing or comedy. With thirty-seven years as an educator behind me, perhaps I might be able to at least voice an intelligent opinion. Either way, I DO know what makes me laugh and what I enjoy. So if you can go with that, (and pardon me, Mr. Stewart for being so presumptuous to pretend to be worthy of writing a review of your comic genius) then here are just my personal thoughts on THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART PRESENTS..EARTH (THE BOOK).
Perhaps, you first should understand that Jon Stewart makes me laugh just to see him on the screen. I also agree with the Time Magazine online poll that named “Jon Stewart as America's Most Trusted Newscaster, post-Cronkite”. Those who don’t agree, welcome to America, where that is your right. But if you don’t realize how very intelligent this man is, and even if you don’t get his humor, you would still enjoy this book. You see, “EARTH” is a 256-page book that is filled with amusing as well as stunning illustrations that is designed very much like a geography or history textbook. The graphics include photographs, illustrations, charts, graphs, and primary sources, all of which are highlighted by the cleverly insightful and entertaining captions. So, for those of you questioning the hard hitting questions and unable to gel with Stewart’s brand of comedy, irreverence, and satire, you will still enjoy the visual effects. Thus, the reason “EARTH” can be on your coffee table and entertain anyone in your home (well, perhaps over a certain age). For the rest of us, you will probably pick it up as I did, and read it through in one delightful, amusing, and enjoyable sitting.
Jon Stewart and the writers of The Daily Show figured since the world was near extinction anyway that they would write a book to generate discussion among most every kind of human society on the planet. Addressing the same questions that have taxed us from the dawn of mankind, such as"where do we come from" and"why are we here", as well as "isn’t there really someone else out there”?, they purportedly spent “two weeks” and produced what they call the “definitive guide to our species”. Written in such a way as to address aliens who have come upon our planet following the demise of civilization, “EARTH” takes on a serious tone even when discussing something totally bizarre.
The writing is sharp and intelligent, like one would expect from the award winning Stewart and his writing team. There is SO much in the book that I know a second “reading” will yield things that I missed the first time around. I wasn’t “rolling on the floor” with every page, but I was thoroughly caught up in the sophisticated humor and understated points that Stewart got across. I was certainly enjoying every minute of it and times when I did laugh out loud, it was because it not only was incredibly funny but also so very smart and spot on. Stewart and his team did their job as I do believe they wrote an all-inclusive guidebook for our neighbors from outer space. I am sure the Aliens will thoroughly understand and be pleased when they do come and find this book, and I hope that many of you will also be able to enjoy it and take away a lot from THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART PRESENT EARTH (THE BOOK).
