MY "REVIEW":

This popular Disney Handy Manny character evolved from an animated children's television series launched in 2006 as part of PLAYHOUSE DISNEY. The show features the adventures of Manny Garcia and his talking tools. It not only entertains young children but also helps them to see the importance of cultural diversity. The series was such a hit with youngsters and parents alike that books and toys have been written and created. The show was so popular that it was offered in places around the world in Spanish and in French as well as English. The books in this set are some that tell simple stories of Manny and his adventures.

Favorite main characters in the series include of course, Manny, the best handyman in Sheetrock Hills; Kelly, who is the owner of the hardware store; and Leonard, or Mr. Lopart, who owns the candy store next door to Manny's workshop. But by far, the most popular characters along with Manny, for children, are the tools. The main tool characters are:

  • Felipe: a Phillips screwdriver who always considers himself a very important tool. He is always over confident about himself. He sometimes thinks of himself as a super hero. Sometimes, his ideas make a problem worse. He also loves to sing.
  • Turner: a flathead screwdriver who appears to be sarcastic and who sometimes argues with Felipe. He appears to have a secret soft spot for animals (including birds, kittens, and butterflies)and for dancing, although he loudly denies it.
  • Stretch: a tape measure who loves to measure things. He can speak out accurate measurements, is able to count well, and can use his tape as an extendable hand.
  • Squeeze: a pair of pliers. She loves to lend a helping hand, and is sometimes impatient to fix something (usually repairs that involve bolts). She also appears to be very girly and preppy.
  • Pat: a hammer who is talkative, clumsy, and not very intelligent. His catchphrase is "I'm a hammer." He is obsessed with nails.
  • Dusty: a hand saw who is very smart, and gives good advice. She's friendly, playful and fun to be around. She is very good with detective work.
  • Rusty: a monkey wrench (though drawn as a pipe wrench) who is not very brave and is a worrywart. Most of the time he needs reassurance from his fellow tools and Manny.
  • Flicker: Manny's youngest tool and is a flashlight who at first only spoke Spanish and was still learning English. Now however, he seems to be fully bilingual.
Other characters include a family of crescent wrenches who go by Lefty (the father), Lily (the mother), and their son, Junior. Many other human characters are part of the cartoon and video series and there are also some newer tool characters that include:
  • Spinner, the power drill
  • Zip, the power socket wrench
  • Sneeze, the shop vac
  • Ticks and Totts, the socket wrenches
  • Pinzas, a pair of needle-nose pliers
  • Roland, a deluxe tool chest
  • Beamer, the laser level
As a former reading teacher, a mom, and now a grandmother, I can't stress how important it is to read with and to your children. Hopefully, you have someone who will enjoy this set of books to get them started with a fun, new character...if they don't know Manny already, that is!
